WHAT It is transforming the existing media lab windows into a translucent LED screen. Then through RFID, Kinect, and other technologies achieve interactive content display. Interact with the visitor by displaying different content at different times. Create a unique digital art gallery through screen and projection equipment. Moreover, this area could become a central stage to show students' works or other creative content.
WHO Students, Faculty, Visitors
WHERE The Ground floor of CAD
1. To drive a stronger brand effect of VCD. Let more people know us and better show our artwork.
2. To better carry forward the new digital media art.
3. Use the mode of interactive installation to create a digital art gallery, letting more people experience the immersive artistic atmosphere.
TRANSFORMATION
[trans-fer-mey-shuh n]
Transformation
means going beyond your form.
Transformation is a process; we want our visitors to experience this journey with us. A short journey through this section of the corridor allows visitors to discover a whole new experience of VCD, Using our works to bring the audience a beautiful visual impact. At the same time challenges VCDer to explore new dimensions and create infinite possibilities.
Students in the Visual Communication Design program may have a relatively distressing question about how to explain some details of this program to others. Someone will always ask how to define and elaborate VCD professionally. Therefore, in the spirit of redefining VCD in a branded way and creating a platform to more intuitively show the current success of VCD students in visual design. To better communicate the VCD project and expand its influence. The project is to create a digital art gallery in the corridor area of the media lab in a way that explores the combination of spatial visuals and interactive experiences, including video images, lighting, and music. Three different modes for different periods showcase different content and visual experiences.
PROMPT: With the development of artificial intelligence, we are eager to experience the surprises that technology brings us anytime, anywhere. Here we will use an interactive translucent screen to turn our corridor space into an art gallery to feel the joy that art brings us all the time, anytime, anywhere, so that every visitor can handle it. The sense of a welcoming ceremony turns the VCD media laboratory into a real media laboratory. This will be our work display platform, and it will also be a beautiful landscape for the School of Design and even RIT.
PROBLEM: Lack of interactivity. Every time people pass by the VCD Media Lab, people cannot feel the embodiment of the Institute of Innovation and Creativity. We need to change! We need innovation! We need something cool! We can turn this area into our art gallery. How to better improve our learning environment and enhance the interaction between designers, faculty, and other people? How to use our unique professionalism to improve our environment and show our works and concepts?
CONCEPTUAL SOLUTION: VCD Media Lab windows are used as the main body to display interactive content. When people pass the VCD media lab, some interactive images will display on the screen. At the same time, the entire corridor lighting is dimmed. Let us imagine that a specific time in the morning, noon, and afternoon will become the Showtime of the CAD ground floor. Turn this into a new landmark of RIT! With the changes in lighting or music, the interactive transparent LED window plays specific digital content made by students.
STANDBY MODE
During class time, this area will switch to Standby mode. The translucent led screen will randomly display a pattern composed of dots. When a pedestrian passes the media lab, the interaction sensor will map the pedestrian's actions on the screen like a mirror.
SHOWTIME MODE
During breaks, the area will switch to showtime mode. The space will be composed of LED screens and projection devices mounted on top of the ceiling to create interactive images. When a visitor passes by VCD media lab, the displayed screen and floor of the area will follow the visitor's actions for interactive feedback.
PLAY MODE
The play mode's primary purpose is to showcase VCD students' artworks or other related promotional videos. Through this area, visitors could more intuitively understand our current achievements.
