Without coaching, or if swim coaches are not available, swimmers will have difficulty identifying their mistakes.
How will swimmers fix mistakes and bad habits without advice and wisdom from coaches?
Head User Display goggle accessory that provides current statistics, and results of a swimmer's performance of a drill.
When a swimmer is about to begin a drill, the HUD activates, naming the type of swimming drill. Drills will start within 10 seconds after selection. Timer is displayed when it reaches final 3 seconds.
During drill, HUD records performance of the swimmer. Recorded data are KPS, Bend, Pull, Extention, and FTM.
Kicks per second (KPS) - Amount
Elbow Bend - Angle
Underwater Pull - Strength
Arm Extention - Reach
Flip Turn Meters (FTM) - Timing, and Power
On the lens of goggles, two meters are displayed during the drill. First meter tracks a swimmer's current progression of drill. Depending on how well swimmer progress is going, color changes brightness. Second meter is a personal record of the swimmer's progess of drill.
When the drill is completed, the recorded data can be viewed in Results and Playback options.
Results - Displays the results of the swimmer's drill based on recorded analysis.
Playback - Displays recorded analysis of drill.
When researching a method for the problem, I have discovered a product called SMART GOGGLES, manufactured by FORM Swim
SMART GOGGLES display information with typography through the direct lens
Critique – information displayed on direct lens can interfere with swimmer's view of environment
As a swimmer, I have some difficultiy identifying mistakes that are being made on my part without the guidence and advice from a swimming coach.
Especially when I was doing a swimming drill, since my priority is focused on completing the drill under a specific time
When brainstorming through concepts for how the project should look, I wanted to have an aquatic look, while having some electronic components.
Originally, I wanted to focus the project to having 3D elements.
Instead, I focused on using meters and simple shapes to communicate information to the user
Originally, a 3D model would mimic the user's movements to accurately show the mistakes a user is making during a drill. However, due to how much space the animtion takes up, the concept was scrapped.
When brainstorming through concepts of swimming, based on my experience as a swimmer, I have considered the idea that the information for swimmers displayed on the distortion on each lens. Therefore, the information can be displayed to a user that won't disrupt their concentration on completing a drill.
I participated the 2023 IMAGINERIT event to present my project. 30% of the general audience happens to be atheltic swimmers of RIT, while around 70% of the audience have some experience with swimming, or sports relating to the project.
Overall, the project was really well received. Some even recommend that the project should be expanded to other sport activities.
Without coaches, swimmers can have a hard time identifying problems with their performance during drills. Goggles can provide same solutions to swimmers, similar to professional coaches.
