A virtual metaverse is not so far away in our future. Our lives may grow to be more integrated with technology than ever before—so how might we approach the idea of creating a seamless bridge between the virtual and the physical, and what might it look like when physical work is able to create digital value?
Stones in the Sword is an AR scavenger hunt where players search for shapes around campus to collect gems. Once all four shapes of gems are collected, the player can combine them in different ways to create their own magical, elemental sword.
In order to get a good sense of what made an experience engaging , we took a look at four different research articles pertaining to play and interactive museum exhibits; we also paid a visit to the Strong Museum of Play.
Important Takeaways
1
Projects that utilized physical activity or puzzle solving had more engagement.
2
Games that were about creation were more engaging to kids.
3
Role-play and fantasy are great gateways into an immersive experience for kids.
Inspiration
Our concept drew inspiration from the fantasy/action/adventure genre and the narrative of the chosen one embarking on a quest to fulfill a legend. The visual style and overarching themes were inspired by Arthurian legends (Excaliber) and other works of media such as The Legend of Zelda, Monster Hunter, Hyper Light Drifter, Into the Spider-verse, etc.
The swords underwent multiple iterations; the objective was to create swords with unique silhouettes that reflected their respective elements and shapes. The designs were also streamlined and simplified over several iterations to make them friendlier to a younger audience.
Quill was employed to aid in the iteration of our design. It is a virtual reality 3D painting program that accelerated our creation of 3D assets. It gave us the ability to build numerous sword iterations at a much faster rate as well as create inspiration for design in multiple places. In the final product, we used it for the virtual environment that was displayed on a projector within our space creating immersive ambiance.
Search for simple shapes in the real world
to find and collect virtual gemstones.
Mix and match your gems when you have obtained all four shapes.
Once all of your gems are finally assembled, your personal sword will be created!
After the completion of the quest, participants got to take home a sticker of their personal creation!
Our project expands into the future of the digital world by combining it with the real world. What we have created is the start of an innovation where people can explore the environment they are in searching for a specific object, shapes, colors, and a variety of other things. By doing this, we are blending these two worlds together for a singular outcome. Putting these two worlds together and burring the digital wall between them is where our future is heading and what we started with our project.
