What is Commural?
Commural is a collection of murals and collaborations that can transform a cityscape through Augmented Reality.
GOALS
Connects members within the community and across communities by existing in a digital space
Teaches the importance of public art by combining the history and culture of the location with engaging visuals
Encourages creativity and imagination by including a variety of different topics, locations, and visual styles
HOW IT WORKS
When in the location of a Commural, the user will be notified and will view the Commural using their personal device through AR.
Commurals appear throughout a city and are catered to the specific locations in which they reside. The murals connect the history and culture of the city with its members.
The Murals
Susan B. Anthony House
Rochester was home to one of the most important 1st wave feminists in the United States, Susan B. Anthony. The Susan B. Anthony house is apart of Western New York's rich history in the fight for women's suffrage, and is the site of Anthony's arrest for voting in 1876.
Anthony was committed to more than just the women's suffrage movement, also being a staunch abolitionist and advocate for labor rights. She is an important figure in Rochester and American history.
Rochester Art Supply
Rochester Art Supply might seem like your average hole-in-the-wall art supply store, but it is a unique and special place for artists in Rochester, New York. The store has an international reputation for selling high quality professional grade materials, specializing in hard to find imported and domestic art supplies.
Rochester Art Supply is home to the largest paper supply in North America, and artists in Rochester regularly come to the store to browse their massive selection of fine art and decorative papers from around the world.
Boston South Market
The South Market is a bustling indoor marketplace located in Downtown Boston. With over 20 vendors, the market offers a diverse selection of goods including fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, and artisanal crafts. Visitors can sample local delicacies or grab a quick bite at one of the many food stalls, or browse the offerings of local artists and makers. The market is conveniently located near major transportation hubs and other attractions, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The mural pays homage to Boston's significant role in the American Revolutionary War.
Boston City Hall
Boston City Hall is a striking example of Brutalist architecture and serves as the center of government for the city of Boston, Massachusetts. Inside, visitors can explore the public spaces, including the grand entrance hall and the council chamber, which features a distinctive circular design. While opinions on the building's appearance are divided, it remains an iconic symbol of Boston's commitment to modern design and functional government.
The mural features prominent players from one of Boston's pride points, the Boston Celtics basketball team.
Physical murals can be damaged, vandalized, and can only be seen by a select group of people. By putting murals in a digital space, the artwork can be preserved and shared.
Commural allows for communities all across the globe to appreciate the value of public art.
